Bird-Filming Tales documentary

Time: 8-9pm

Description:
Bird-Filming Tales, presented by film makers Michael Male and Judy Fieth, will be held at the North Street Playhouse on Market Street in Onancock. The program will feature previews and behind-the-scenes stories from the just-finished "Watching Warblers-West" and some brand new scenes that were filmed this year of wintering Waterfowl and Shorebirds here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The presentation will include a Q&A segment.

While they have produced many films about birds, wildlife and their habitat, their labor of love is a series of videos and DVDs about the birds of North America. "Watching Warblers," the first of these was finally finished in 1996 after 10 years of squeezing in filming trips between projects that paid the bills. "Watching Waders," was released in 1999, and "Watching Sparrows" in 2002. "Watching Warblers - West" is in the editing stage, and waterfowl and shorebirds are being filmed.

Take Wing and Win

Become a Frequent Flier at the businesses in Onancock and enter to win a piece of wildlife art created by Bobby Swain, renowned local artisan. At the invitation of The White House, Bobby carved a Christmas ornament for the 2002 White House Christmas tree. His work can be found in collections around the world.

Similar to a scavenger hunt, visitors will pick up a card at the OBCA table in Town Square Park, visit 10 participating merchants, have the card stamped (no purchase necessary), and return the filled card to the OBCA table to qualify for a prize of an original Bobby Swain carving. The drawing will take place at 6 pm at the Gazebo. You must be present to win.

Birdwatching Kayak Tour

Time: 11 am-2 pm and 3-6 pm

Description:
Southeast Expeditions Birdwatching Kayak Tours (including a guided nature walk through Parker's Marsh).

Parkers Marsh Natural Area Preserve has been described as the jewel of Onancock creek. Its remote setting, fronting the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the creek, makes this a quiet, wonderful place to bird watch. The Audubon Society has included it in its Delmarva Bayside Marshes Important Birding Area (IBA). It is a documented breeding site for a host of Audubon-determined "species at risk," including the Black rail, Saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow, Henslow's sparrow and Sedge wren. A pair of Peregrine falcons successfully mated here in 1998; the hawking tower that stands high above the marsh awaits another attempt. This trip combines two hours of kayaking with a break half-way through for a leg-stretcher along Sound Beach.
